Comment Comedians Do Not Get Laughs From Me

Bob+Hope Comment Comedians Do Not Get Laughs From Me

RCs think that they are hilarious. Most of you probably are- but not when it comes to my restaurant. In groups of four or more there will generally always be a Comment Comedian. It’s usually a guy, he’s usually college age or over forty and overweight. This is the person who says “So, what are they doing back there? I mean, did they have to catch the fish? Are they slaughtering the chicken out back? I mean…” at which point he dissolves into laughter, literally cracking himself up. And his companions usually laugh as well, albeit a little less hysterically than he does. I feel like saying, “Why, yes sir, who told you about the chicken slaughtering? If you go around back to the red fenced area, knock twice and give the man a ten-spot, you can watch! For twenty you can help!”

Another favorite one-liner for the Comment Comedian? “So is this soup meant to be cold? I mean, I’m just asking because I thought soup had to be hot for cheese to melt, but I could be wrong.” Hardy Har Har sir. Here’s the thing, sir. I want you to enjoy your dining experience. I truly do. Rest assured that if your meal is taking a long time, I’m back there in the window advocating for it right and left. If your soup is cold, I have no problem heating it up, or getting you a fresh cup. And I don’t mind you pointing these discrepancies out to me, I really don’t. How will I know, if you don’t tell me? But you’re not funny. Trust me. The people with you are only laughing because you’re paying for dinner. Oh, and here’s another thing sir, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit- in RCs. It’s a humorous coping mechanism for folks in the service industry.

The bottom line is the same bottom line that every post has. We, the servers, do not appreciate any attempts to belittle us or our place of employment. We belittle our restaurant in the back, but that’s different. Kind of like I can beat the tar out of my little brother but you better not touch a hair on his head. Your pathetic attempts at humor will do nothing to speed your service, or improve its quality. If anything, it could have a deleterious effect. I’m just saying.

I completely agree. I especially love the comments about how long well done meat takes. I thought it was just common sense that pizzas and well done meat take longer than a salad or cold sandwich.
